This is a great example of what happened in Swedish glassworks in the mid 20th century when designers with a modernist aesthetic were hired to design glassware. This unusual bowl was designed by Hugo Gehlin for the Gullaskruf glassworks, probably in the early 1950’s, as he left Gullaskruf in 1953. . The color is a pale indigo blue. The bowl measures 6” across and 2 1/8” high and has a unique double wall, visible when the piece is viewed from the side. This type of bowl was made by blowing out a bubble of glass, then reheating the end of the bubble and tilting the blowpipe up vertically so the hot end of the bubble sags down into the rest of the shape. After annealing, the base of the bowl was cut and polished. The bottom bears the signature “Gehlin Gulaskruf”. The piece is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks and no signs of wear except some scratches on the bottom consistent with the age of the bowl. Unusual design and great color!
